What is Health and Wellness?

Health is a state of being and wellness is a state of living. The basic health and wellness triangle is made up of four components: physical, mental social health, and spiritual. A majority of people think of physical and mental health as the only part of it, however that is false because physical and mental is only a small part of the big picture of health.

Physical health has to do with the absence of disease and disability.  Physical health can be effected from what a person eats to what they do to workout. Mental health which includes emotional health, may make explicit reference to intellectual capabilities; the subjective sense of well-being. Social health is the ability to interact effectively with other people and the social environment which satisfies interpersonal relationships. Spiritual health is associated with the concept of self-actualization; it sometimes reflects a concern for issues related to one’s values system. It can also be talked about as a belief in a transcending unifying force like science, nature, God, etc.

There are certain things that can influence one’s health. Heredity has a big impact on your health. Heredity is usually thought of physical traits like hair color, eye color, etc. It also influences your general level of health, for instance certain genes passed down could put you at risk for certain illnesses and some genes can strengthen one’s resistance to some diseases. The environment has a big impact on your health. There are three different types of environments: physical, social, and cultural which are all important to your health. Physical environment has to do with what/who is around you. If a person lives in a safe environment there is a better chance to have better physical and mental health than say a person living in a home with smokers and the city they live in has a high crime rate.  Social environment has to do with the people you come in contact with everyday, having supportive peers/family can lead to having good social health. Cultural environment has to do with tradition and beliefs which not everyone has, but it is important to have tradition and beliefs in your life. Attitude is a big thing when it comes to health because if you have a positive outlook on things you will go so much farther than someone who always has a negative outlook. Behavior affects your physical, mental, social, and emotional health. Behavior and attitude go hand and hand with each other. Behavior has to do with things like problem solving or if one of your relatives died of lung cancer you have the power to stay positive and do things like not smoking that will decrease the chance of you getting lung cancer. Some believe media does not have an affect on health, that is very false. Media advertises and is always on the radio, television, and more places. Media shapes the opinion of the public because your always looking at it. Technology has impacted health and people around the world. Technology has created medical advancements like x-rays, vaccines, or treatment to AIDS. There are so many advancement in the medical field and they keep on occurring.

Health and wellness is a topic that keeps growing stronger, and it has a lot of different factors that affect one’s health. A majority of people think of health and either think of physical health or mental health. This is a common mistake people make for their health because they do not look at the other important factors in their life that affect their health.
